Wells and District Community Centre, affectionately known as the ‘White Building’ has been serving the community of Wells for a number of years. The building is currently being leased by the Old Engine Shed trust and has a number of regular users. The White Building is in urgent need of repair and investment.
The proposal is for Elim Christian Centre, Wells (ECC) to take on the White Building to secure its future for community use. ECC is based at 24 Chamberlain Street, Wells that it currently uses as a church building and for its community-based work.
ECC would manage the White Building and actively encourage its maximum use for a wide range of community purposes. Its staffed office would be located there.
ECC would use the building for its own range of activities, including for young people, for counselling, for parent & toddler groups and, through its Soup Kitchen, for (mainly) homeless people, support programs for workers from overseas, signposting, and supporting those with serious personal problems.
ECC is keen to develop its partnerships with service providers and voluntary organisations in Wells. There is no desire to compete with existing organisations, or to do work which other professionals already do. The plan is to catch the people in the community who are not well catered for. By working alongside other service providers in a supporting role and filling gaps that cannot be met ECC will have a valuable role in connecting people and organisations. The White Building and its planned state of the art facilities is designed for this purpose.
ECC would also make the space available to local authority agencies, voluntary sector service providers and community groups to use for the benefit of the community. There are also plans for limited commercial activity within the building’s remit.
